2020 Rubellite Red Blend
Our inspiration for this delicious red blend is a rare, ruby-red mineral called Rubellite. Changing slightly each vintage, it tends to be a blend of Syrah, Grenache with a dash of Riesling (this year we added Malbec!). Similar to a Rhone co-ferment of Viognier, Riesling is our Austrian inspired secret sauce that imparts some vibrant magic. Each vintage since 2012, we’ve found Rubellite to be a perfect blend of elements - floral, fruit and mineral. Reminiscent of a classic Rhone bistro wine, this “fresh” red lends to drinking early and often.
The 2020 vintage is balanced and medium bodied with bright fruit and subtle Syrah smoke on the nose, aromas of vanilla, blackberries, fresh figs, white pepper and licorice. On the palate, the Syrah plays well with the Grenache, notes of fresh black cherries and raspberries accompanied by an herbal and spicy finish that reminds us of the summer savory planted in our garden. The small addition of early harvest Malbec adds a great pop of tart red fruit. There’s a brightness throughout that’s definitely attributed to the dash of Riesling - just enough to pick up on the palate and make the aromas intriguing.
